Grease 2 and a Flasher

What's On? Wednesday: Grease 2

Sequels are never as good as the first film. They debated it in Scream 2 and there have been many discussions on message boards. They came up with a few that are still being debated: The Godfather II is better than The Godfather. Empire Strikes Back is better than Star Wars: A New Hope. They never mention the sequel that I feel was better than the original: Grease 2.

Don't get me wrong, I like Olivia Newton-John and Stockard Channing, but they were just about the only thing I did like from the original (except for Eve Arden and Dody Goodman of course). The first half of Grease was keeping the two main stars apart and then overnight, Sandy changed and that was it, Danny was hooked. But he was always hooked. He liked Sandy, but pretended not to, so he could keep up appearances with his friends. It wasn't about finding each other, but rather changing so everyone else would accept them. Whatever.

Maxwell Caulfield played Michael Carrington (cousin to Sandy from the original). He was a cute, but bookish boy trying to find friends.

Stephanie (Michelle Pfeiffer) was the leader of the Pink Ladies and was the tough girl who was expected to be going with the leader of the T-Birds (Adrian Zmed).

Michael realizes that to attract Stephanie, he needed to toughen up by riding a motorcycle. He then becomes this mysterious "Cool Rider" and Stephanie falls for it.

Keeping a secret identity is tough, but in the reveal, Stephanie realizes she got two men for the price of one.

Accurate synopsis? I could have gotten a little more in depth, but the plots available elsewhere on the web.

The reason I'm posting about Grease 2 is that I love this movie and it's my blog and I want to talk about how much I love it. It introduced me to Michelle Pfeiffer who I think is one of the most beautiful women in the world. I actually think she got better looking as she got older.

It also introduced me to Maxwell Caulfield. You can tell how I feel about him by looking at my other posts this week. He has a clean cut look that I just melt over.

In addition to After Dark magazine, I have also been collecting other magazines like In Touch, Christopher Street and Prevue. The magazine scans for this post came from an article in the August/September issue of Prevue. The article was called "Michelle: Sizzling Hot in Pink Satin and Leather" by Jeff Rovin. The photos for the article were from Greg Gorman.

Now, I can't leave this part of the post without saying how much I love Eve Arden. This was her last film role and she was classic.

In the title of this post, I mention a flasher. For those of you who haven't noticed or heard about this, there is a scene where an extra comes out of his shorts. In the scene, the preppy (peppy) twin cheerleaders (Liz and Jean Sagal) are trying to talk to Michael while he's running on the track. Off to the side is a young man who is jumping hurdles. On his last leap, it appears he came loose from either his jockstrap or underwear. When he came down and everytime he lifted his left leg during his running stride, his male genitalia was visible. He reached down like he was going to adjust and fix it, but since he was on camera, he probably didn't want to be seen touching or grabbing his crotch. Instead, he just kept running hoping no one would notice. It lasts for a few seconds until he crosses in front of the camera. Click the photo to see it better.

I have seen this film at least a hundred times and never noticed it. It wasn't until my sharp-eyed Facebook friend Roller Boogie Boy pointed it out to me, that I saw it. I guess I was always distracted because I was looking at Maxwell Caulfield's ass as he trotted backwards.

Now, go back to your DVD (I know you own a copy) and rewatch that scene. I feel kinda bad for the guy. He probably thought that if it was seen in the shot, the director would have done another take. Or at the very least, the editor would cut him out of the shot or something. Nope. Almost 30 years later, this poor guy is still living with the fact that he showed his stuff on camera and it wasn't even porn.

  2. Len, I love you. That's really all I can say. You are my kindred movie spirit. Eve Arden should be in every movie. Ever. When she says "the T-Bones" in that lovely, almost British, Eve Arden voice, I crack up. Thank you for sharing Grease 2 with the world!
